ArtExpress 2025
We’re excited to share that Anngie Chuah is featured in the ARTEXPRESS 2025 Virtual Exhibition, which officially launched this June. Her HSC Visual Arts body of work, titled Foreign Familiarity, was selected earlier this year and is now available for the public to view online.
Anngie’s work is a deeply personal exploration of memory, cultural identity and shifting perspectives. Inspired by the urban streetscapes of her childhood in Singapore, she reflects on how familiar places take on new meaning over time. A unique feature of her piece is the use of embedded lighting within the canvas, a detail that may not have been possible to display in a traditional gallery, but is beautifully showcased in the virtual format.
“Foreign Familiarity examines how the places and things we view in our childhood change as we grow up... It is a nostalgic representation of the innocence of childhood and my loss of culture and memories in moving to Australia.”
Her use of bold colour and layered imagery captures this sense of emotional contrast, between the brightness of childhood memories and the more subdued view that comes with growing older. Anngie’s achievement sets a strong example for upcoming senior high school students, showing how thoughtful, personal storytelling combined with creative innovation can lead to meaningful recognition.
You can view Foreign Familiarity now as part of the ARTEXPRESS 2025 Virtual Exhibition.
